Near the town of Verul, close to the world-renowned Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, stands Grishneshwar — the twelfth and final of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

The Legend of Kusuma's Devotion

According to legend, a devout woman named Kusuma worshipped Lord Shiva with unwavering faith every single day. Her co-wife, consumed by jealousy over Kusuma's devotion and the happiness of her family, killed Kusuma's son and cast his body into a nearby tank.

Undeterred by her grief, Kusuma continued her worship of Shiva without interruption. Moved by her steadfast devotion, Lord Shiva restored her son to life and, at the request of the assembled devotees, chose to remain at that very place eternally as a Jyotirlinga — a lasting tribute to Kusuma's faith. This is why the shrine is also known as Kusumeshwar.

Temple Architecture

The present temple structure was built in the 1730s under the patronage of the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar, whose contributions to rebuilding several Jyotirlinga temples across India — including Kashi Vishwanath and Somnath — remain widely celebrated. The temple is built of red volcanic rock in a Dravidian architectural style, adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
